Ian Gates

I joined CHP Consulting Australia in April 2005 with five years' experience in consulting and IT, and travelled to London to undertake the induction training. On returning to Sydney, I joined an implementation team conducting the business benefits realisation phase of a large implementation project for one of the top five Australian banks.

We had implemented the majority of our ALFA modules across all Australian states, and took the opportunity to capitalise on ALFA's workflow capabilities to streamline their business processes and throughput.

Given my expertise with Java and web development, I was heavily involved in the development of our web-enabled vendor/broker quoting system. This is now being used by one of Australia's fastest-growing innovative commercial financiers for government, multinationals, public and private companies. Subsequently, the solution has been adopted by our USA team and is being used by one of our stateside clients. I am now one of CHP's web experts and have recently undertaken the design and delivery of our new web-enabled floorplan finance module.

My career with CHP Australia has been varied, allowing me to apply my skills in analysis, design and development to provide innovative business solutions for a range of clients. Other aspects of the organisation with which I've been involved include attending and exhibiting at industry conferences, and being heavily involved in our sales process - which means responding to requests for tender, and delivering demonstrations of our software solution to prospective clients. Being part of a small dynamic company opens the door to opportunities that are not as accessible in larger organisations. CHP has allowed me to take ownership of projects and see them through from the original vision to their realisation as production-strength applications. I have been involved in marketing our existing applications, building new ones, and working up close with our clients to understand their business and streamline their operations. CHP Consulting has offered me this diversity of roles all in four short years. This is the benefit of working with a small team of highly skilled consultants.

Outside of the office, the CHP culture achieves a nice balance between work and life. We have regular social functions, company meetings, company conferences and celebratory events that allow me to socialise with my colleagues outside the confines of work. These social events have enabled me to play at some of Australia's top ranked golf courses, cruise the Whitsunday Islands, attend the Rugby League Grand Final and visit Ayers Rock to name but a few. CHP makes an enormous effort to reward their employees - this is an aspect of the company that does not just pay lip service to the concept of a work-life balance, but really achieves it.
